in the mix

Neo Grunge/Elle Italia November 2010/Photographer: Michael Sanders

Always an Autumn/Winter favourite for me, tartan is my favourite pattern to layer with. It has a classic grungy vibe, but also rules in terms of practicality. Take a checkered flannel shirt - buttoned up, left open, worn on the waist, or under a jumper - practical and cosy. Not exactly high-FASHION or the next-best-thing, but a hardworking piece in any winter wardrobe. Or maybe I'm getting lazy when it comes to winter dressing? Either way, dressing down and kicking back with a slightly teenage grunge vibe appeals to me greatly. Re-living the 90s obvs.

inspiration #3: ankle socks

To me, styling is all about the little details. It’s the little quirks and attention to detail which I admire most about great outfits. Ankle socks are one of my little pleasures I like to indulge in during winter. It’s a necessity which can easily become an accessory. I’m especially enjoying the combination of socks and trousers, masculine styling with a bit of fun. Whether choosing to go bold with a pair of neon socks, or a more muted autumnal colour, I think we should pay more attention to the humble sock. Show them off - roll up your jeans or trousers, wear them on top of tights, the possibilities are endless. So, when you’re choosing your socks tomorrow morning, go crazy, dig out your best socks [ribbed, striped, glittery…] and wear them with pride. I promise you, it will make you smile.

inspiration #2: in black

However hard I try to bring myself to wear colour right now, I just can't. Winter weather has finally set in and i'm reaching for all things black, navy and grey in my wardrobe. Boring? I think not. Mixing black with interesting silhouettes (both structured and unstructured), textures, and details makes an all black outfit less 'goth' more 'chic'. I especially really like the slouchy black sweatshirt and sliver threaded chiffon shirt paired with studded trainers, the perfect edgy combination. Update a lacklustre black jumper by wearing it over a floaty maxi skirt, a crisp white shirt or a pair of checked tapered trousers.

electric blue

These street style photographs by The Sartorialist have re-kindled my love for electric blue. It's a powerful, striking, and rich colour. Stella McCartney's A/W 2012/3 collection used blue beautifully. When worn bold, head to toe, it's utterly mesmerising. If you were rocking one of these Stella's dresses at your Christmas party (too early?), all eyes would be on you. A bit too much? Mix blue with grey or black to play it safe.
Personally, I think I'll be wearing my pleated electric blue midi with a grey sweatshirt.
